Research

Professor Jens Rydgren holds the Chair in Sociology at the Department of Sociology at Stockholm University. He is also a research affiliate at the Institute for Future Studies in Stockholm.

Prof. Rydgren graduated from Stockholm University in 2002, and he has been a visiting scholar at Columbia University, Cornell University, Harvard University, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, Copenhagen University, and Utrecht University. He is working within the fields of political sociology, ethnic relations, and social networks, and is currently involved in the following research projects:

¤ Individual Life Chances in Social Context - A Longitudinal Multi-Methods Perspective on Social Constraints and Opportunities

This project is funded by an ERC Starting Grant, and by research grants from the Swedish Research Foundation (VR) and the Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare (FORTE), and started in June 2011. It focuses contextual factors explaining differences in young adults’ life chances in a longitudinal perspective. We propose a synthetic approach to the study of life chances (education, labor market situation, health) that integrates traditional models with a fuller focus on contextual factors—neighborhoods and social networks in particular. We are in the process of collecting a unique data set relating to social capital of a cohort of Swedish young adults (born in 1990), which includes individuals with and without immigrant background (N=5600), in order to analyze the significance of social capital for individual life chances. We are in the process of analyzing data from the second wave of the planned three-wave panel study. The third wave of the survey is planned for 2020. [The project's home page.]

¤ Social Networks and Xenophobia

In this project, which is partly funded by FORTE, we are studying social network effects on xenophobia and prejudice. We rely on survey data measuring egocentric networks and attitudes, register data on both the individual and aggregated level (neighborhoods, schools, and municipalities) that will be linked to the survey  data. Aside from xenophobia and prejudice, we are also interested in explaining variance in e.g. trust, political participation, and voting behavior.

¤ Ethnic conflict in Northern Iraq

This is a joint project together with Dana Sofi and Martin Hällsten, funded by VR. Using a combination of quantitative analysis of questionnaire data, qualitative analysis of interviews and field notes, and historic analysis, we are in particular interested in the importance of interethnic social capital (to what extent do cross-cutting ties prevail, how are they generated, and do they lead to increased trust and tolerance), and the link between collective memory, trust, and ethnic conflict.

¤ The Radical Right in Western Europe

In this project we study radical right-wing parties and movements in Western Europe from a comparative perspective. The principal aims are to explain variation in electoral mobilization across countries and over time.

Previous research projects: local elite networks; belief formation processes.
